We’ll tell you something about Haikou in this section. It is the capital city of Hainan Province , but we usually call the province Hainan Island. Hainan Island is China's most southerly province and the second largest island after Taiwan, the largest ocean island and the smallest land province in China.
Haikou, known also as the 'Coconut City', is the capital of Hainan Province, located at the northern end of Hainan Island, on the west bank of the Nandu River estuary, which is the longest on the island and the city's name appropriately means 'Mouth of the Sea'.
The city is good for business travel, is also known as a port town that handles most of the island’s commerce with the mainland. The city is quite pretty, with a sprinkling of temples and some charming remains of Sino-Portuguese, colonial architecture. Here there are modern and convenient public transport facilities and many shopping malls which meet your needs. 30 minutes by taxi from Haikou Meilan Airport, and 3.5 hours from Sanya.

History

Hainan was named Zhuya, Qiongzhou and Qiongya at various ancient times. In Yuan Dynasty, Emperor Hanwu (110 BC) started to set the Zhuya and Dan'er prefectures on the island. The administration was changed hereafter. In the end of Tang Dynasty, the Qiongzhoufu was establishes and commanded Qiong, Ya, Dan, Zhen, and Wanan, 5 states 22 counties. From Ming Dynasty (in 1370) to the end of Qing Dynasty, Qiongzhoufu was under the administration of Guangdong.
In the Republic of China era, Hainan was still dominated by Guangdong Province. In April 1949 the Hainan special administrative region senior official government office was established, for vice-provincial level government. After May 1st, 1950 Hainan administration government office was created, still subordinated to Guangdong Province. In April 1988 Hainan provincial people's government was established with Haikou as its capital. The Hainan special economic zone was established at the same time.

Attractions in Haikou

Besides its natural resources, Haikou has a number of important sites of historical interest.
The Wugong Temple (The Five Official's Temple), the Tomb f Hai Rui and each serve as reminders of the historical importance of Haikou.
Tomb of Hai Rui is situated in the western outskirts of Haikou City, built in 1589 during the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) to esteem towards Hai Rui, an upright and uncorrupted official, who is famed as a statesman for his honesty and performance of his duty as well as his clean life. Some of the constructions in the tomb garden remain intact. With an area of over 4,000 square meters (4784 square yards), the layout was designed according to the level of the official titles at that time. Today it is rated as the Key Cultural Relic Preservation of Hainan Province.

Wugong Temples, are approximately 5 kilometers (about 3.1 miles) from the centre of Haikou City, and were originally constructed during the reign of Emperor Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was renovated on several occasions during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Now, it is a place known for its sense of peace, tranquility and beauty. Wugong Temple is considered to be "the No.1 Building in Hainan" even though it is only a two-storied wooden building. This was constructed to commemorate the five famous officials- Li Deyu, Li Gang, Zhao Ding, Li Guang and Hu Quan who were banished to Hainan during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The main hall houses the vivid and lifelike stone statues of the five prestigious officials. On the inner pillars, there are two much praised couplets which visitors, having learnt about the background of the five officials, cannot help but admire. Additionally, a stone tablet that is carved with calligraphy inscriptions of Emperor Huizong, from the Song Dynasty, is also displayed in the Wugong Temple.

Attractions in Hainan Island

Boao Boao, the water town, is located at the east of Qionghai city, Hainan island, emerges at the meeting points of three famous river (Wanquan, Jiuqu, and Longgun), characterized by rivers, lakes, sea, sandy beach, mountains, hot spring, etc. It is also famous because of the Asia Forum every year.
Wanquan River, located in Qionghai city, east of Hainan Island, is the mother river in Hainan. The whole length of Wanquan River is 163 kilometers, originated from Five-finger Mountain. Along the upper reaches are marvelous peaks, flourishing coconut trees and busy ships and people can't bear themselves away because of the charming water scenery; along the lower reaches are densely covered ports and people enjoy themselves so much by the scenes full of pastoral characteristics. Wanquan River tourist zone that is provincial landscape zone takes the nature river scenery as its principal part, and its main function is tour, travel, entertainment and taking holiday. Wanquan River is mainly made up of Wanquan River tourism and entertainment dock, megalith Coconut Street, Shopping Street, Red Women Army Statue, ShaZhou lsland, and Wanquan River Big Dam. The tourist items include the big water sightsee yacht, motorboat, yacht, bamboo raft and so on..

BFA Permanent Venue is located on the Dongyu Island near the mouth of Wanquan River to the South China Sea which is the best protected river mouth of the world.

Jade belt beach, Where the three rivers of Wanquan, Jiuqu, and Longgun flow into the South China Sea, a narrow long golden jade belt beach separate the river and the sea, forming the natural landscape, listed in the Guiness record of the world. It's a perfect combination of natural.

Yalong Bay

Yalong Bay is honored “the first bay in the world”, situated in the same latitudes as Hawaii and enjoys similar temperatures and weather conditions, about 25 km east of Sanya. The sea off the beach is so clear that visibility can reach almost 8 m, reflecting the blue sky and white sand beneath the depths.
The average water temperature averaging 25.1 C and never dipping below 22 C. It is an ideal place for relaxation, water sports, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Facilities are also good here. This great beach is adjacent to shops, restaurants and a museum with a pretty collection of sea shells. There is also a charming outdoor butterfly garden here with a mountain hiking trail and some great walks. 36-hole golf course, water sports, are also offered.

Dadonghai

Dadonghai is one of Sanya's cleanest beaches, situated about 3 km from the centre of the city and just off the main road.  The water temperature is about 20C degrees even in winter, hence its reputation as an ideal spot for winter holidaying and relaxation. The beach's close proximity to the city means that it can get very busy here but this remains a pleasant and convenient spot to kick off your shoes, soak up the rays and swim in the sea. Like most of the beaches around Sanya, this is a truly tropical beach with 3 km of white sand curving round a crescent shaped bay, warm blue seas and palm trees. Facilities here are good too. Scuba diving and other water sports are popular and cheapest comparison with Yalong Bay and Sanya Bay, and there are numerous restaurants and bars serving up tasty snacks and drinks, and there is a big shopping mall - Summer Mall for those staying at Dadonghai. It is particularly pleasant here in the evenings, when the sun sets and the crowds disapear.

Nanshan Cultural Park

Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone is located in Sanya, the sole tropical coastal city in China with the land area of 50 sq. km. The whole tourist zone is faced to the open and wide sea and backed with beautiful and magnificent Nanshan Mountain, sited in splendid and graceful natural anslandscapes. It is established with ratification of natural authorities as a combined multi-sector and multi-layered international culture tourist yard mingling various cultures of Chinese minorities, environment protection campaign, tropical sea sight-seeing spots and Buddhism cultures.

Water sports& Scuba Diving 

For those who want to stay wet, Sanya is the scuba divers’ heaven due to its clear and warm water, extensive coral reefs and abundant marine life.

If you stay in Yalong Bay and Dadonghai, or Sanya bay, all the beachfront hotels offer water sports for the hotel guests such as Jet Ski, Banana boat, etc.

Scuba diving and Snorkeling Scuba Diving in Sanya is very good in the world, almost as good as in Bali island, Indonesia. There are a number of operations conducting diving trips for visitors, and there are also package tours specifically for scuba divers. If you are traveling independently, and you just want the occasional dive, make sure you bring your scuba certification. Most of the main qualifications are recognized, including those of PADI, NAUI, CMAS. Keen divers might also bring their own mask and regulator, though all the equipment is available for rent.

Baifu Bay & Sun Bay, which is another bays in Sanya near Yalong Bay, are the best diving sites. You will reach the both bays by taking a boat from Yalong Bay cost around 20 minutes. Since both of the 2 bays are not open for travelers yet, the water visibility is the best and the coral reef is the most beautiful.

Hot Spring

Seven Fairs Mountain Hot Spring (Qixianling Hot Spring), located in Baoting county, middle of Hainan, 1.5 hours drive from Sanya. It enjoys a high fame both inside China and all around the world. Seven Fairs Mountain is one the tropical rain forest area in China, providing with tropic vegetation, outdoor stream and waterfall which are famous for their limpidity. The temperature of the outdoor hot spring is 97°C in highest and 93°C in average.

Night life

Haikou Night life The night scene viewed on the Hainan Island is so enchanting that you must join it by yourself. The best way is by eating and drinking. The schedules are usually at 20:00pm - 3:00pm(next morning). Maybe because of the hot weather, people in Hainan don’t like being out in daytime, they usually come out at night and chating with friends in BBQ gardon or having a walk with family. And these always spend many hours in the night.

Climate

The Hainan Province climate is the tropical monsoon climate and the tropical oceanic climate. It's always high temperature and wet, dry and rainy seasons are distinct. There are more tropical storms and typhoon in summer. The average temperature very year is 22-26, in January-February average temperature is 16-24and in July-August the average temperature is 25-29.It's like spring all the year round.

Transportation

Visitors could also reach the island by Flight, by Ferry , by Train or by Bus. Middle, east and west-line, the three arterial highways from Haikou to Sanya as well as the east-line Express way going through the eastern from north to south complete the land traffic skeleton of the whole island. The most popular way t o get to Hainan Island is by flight. There are 2 airports in Hainan Island, one is Haikou Meilan airport located in Haikou city, and the other is Sanya Phoenix Airport. There are more than 30 direct flights to Sanya from other cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Wuhan, Qingdao, and some international airlines from HongKong, Seoul, and Moscow. There will be more flights to Haikou as it is the capital city of the island, so if there is no direct flight from your departing city to Sanya, you can fly to Haikou, then take bus down to Sanya cost 3.5 hours, otherwise, you can fly to Sanya via Guangzhou because there will be around 10 flights from Guangzhou to Sanya daily and needs only 60 minutes.   Guangzhou to Haikou railway started from Dec.5, 2004 with a length of 568 km , which is the Chinese only one cross-strait channel passageway. By Ferry
 Hainan is the isolate island, divided with China mainland by the Qiongzhou Strait. Before the popular air flight and train, the only way to the island is by boat from Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Hai’An, Guangdong province; or Beihai, Guangxi province. The Ferry schedule will be adjusted or cancelled for bad weather without further notice. There is no Ferry to Sanya directly, if you don’t mind to spend more time and wish to come to Sanya by Ferry, you can take the Ferry to Haikou, then take bus down to Sanya. By Bus
Sanya is convenient to the highway networks in Hainan Island. It takes 3.5 hours to Haikou by bus through the East Express, which is the shortest way to Haikou. Every day, there are many long-distance buses with sleeping berth departing from Sanya Bus Station to other provinces in Chinese mainland such as Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, etc.

Food

On food, Hainan Island is well known for its Four Famous Dishes:

1. Wenchang Chicken the meat of the chicken is much tougher than that those we have in Singapore. you had to use your hand to pull off the meat when eating parts which are more muscular like the thigh and drumstick. For the dip, the sauce is a mixture of chicken broth, diced ginger, garlic and spring onions.
2. Jiaji Duck  it was took to Qionghai by countrymen residing abroad. Also boiled and eat with the mixtures.
3. Dongshan Mutton Dongshan Sheep, the characteristic of this dish is the meat is fresh and tender.
4. Hele Crab Hele Crab,It is famous for its hard shell, thick crab meat as well as full xiehuang.
Seafood

Sanya is located at north latitude 18 degree, and its sea water is high in salt-bearing, that makes seafood there taste very good.  Abalone, sea cucumber and other exotic foods are common dishes served in restaurants here, and a visit to the port area in the city center is testament to the incredible wealth and freshness of the food here.  There are many ways to cook, steamed, fried, braised, and hot-pot.
